Founded in the late 1960s by AA Bronson, Felix Partz, and Jorge Zontal, General Idea challenged societal norms through mediums like theatrical performance, magazines, and television shows, blending humour with incisive critique. "Great AIDS" is an historic example of the collective's activism surrounding the AIDS epidemic. Inspired by Robert Indiana's LOVE motif, General Idea appropriated the image in 1987 to raise awareness about AIDS, a disease shrouded in silence and stigma.
