Additional Details

Acquired from the Marlborough Gallery, New York, New York, circa 1980; to a Private Collector.

Abbott, a young artist from Ohio, traveled in the early 1920s to Paris where she assisted Man Ray in his portrait studio. Soon after, she set up her own establishment, shooting cultural and artistic luminaries. With the publication of "Ulysses," she made several studies of Joyce, including this rare portrait.

According to John Kuehl, "By now it is common knowledge that when the writer F. Scott Fitzgerald met James Joyce at a Sylvia Beach dinner party in July 1928 he threatened to jump out a window to honor Joyce's genius."
