Additional Details

Abbott, who had assisted photographer Man Ray for three years, opened her own Parisian atelier in 1926. Her biographer Hank O'Neal notes that "Abbott's subjects were people in the artistic and literary worlds, including French nationals (Jean Cocteau), expatriates (James Joyce), and others just passing through the city. " Early on she photographed Joyce at home. Later on, in 1928, she photographed the novelist again, this time in her studio.
