ABEL PANN (1883-1963) CONCERT DE CHARITÉ / DES LÉGIONNAIRES JUIFS. 1916.
45x29 1/4 inches, 114 1/4x74 1/4 cm. H. Chachoin, Paris.
Condition B+: minor restored losses at edges; repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds; light water staining in margins; toned.
Reminiscent of works by Steinlen, a tender monochrome image of grieving children promoting a benefit concert to raise money for the "widows of and mutilated Jewish soldiers." Born in Odessa, Pann (originally Pfeffermann) went to Paris to study art in 1903. In 1913, he moved to Palestine, where he taught at the Bezalel Academy of Art, however he was in Paris when the First World War broke out and was unable to leave. Pann is highly regarded for his biblical paintings. He designed several posters during the First World War (both French and American), all with Jewish themes. Rickards 144.
