ABEL PANN CONCERT DE CHARITE DONNE AU BENEFICE . . . DES LEGIONNAIRES JUIFS. 1916.
44 1/4x31 1/2 inches. (112 x 80 cm.) H. Chachoin, Paris.
Condition B+: wrinkling and creasing in margins; water stain up left side of image. Paper.
Reminiscent of works by Steinlen, a tender monochrome image of grieving children promoting a benefit concert to raise money for the "widows of and mutilated Jewish soldiers." Born in Odessa, Pann (originally Pfeffermann) went to Paris to study art in 1903. In 1913 he moved to Palestine, where he taught at the Bezalel Academy of Art. He was in Paris when the war broke out and found he couldn't leave. Pann is highly regarded for his biblical paintings. He designed several posters during the first world war (both French and American), all with Jewish themes. Rickards 144.
