Abigail Heyman's groundbreaking illustrated book encapsulated the transformational spirit of the 1970s, a heady time in which women openly shared their personal stories, which were then set into relief against a broader backdrop of the American feminist movement. A woman-identified photojournalist, Heyman was one of the first women admitted to the prestigious photographer's cooperative Magnum. She directed the documentary and photojournalism department at the International Center of Photography, and was the author other feminist-inspired books.

During the mid- to late-1970s, Growing Up Female was often seen as the companion volume to the best-selling Our Bodies Our Selves.
