ABRAHAM BLOEMAERT (FOLLOWER OF)
St. Jerome in Penitence.<>

Pen and brown ink and wash, partly squared in black chalk, with touches of red chalk, black ink and lead white on cream laid paper mounted on card stock. 160x104 mm; 6 3/8x4 1/8 inches.

The current work is a slightly larger copy, in the same direction, after Bolswert's engraving of Bloemaert's design (Hollstein 104) from the set of 23 Saints and Hermits<>, 1612 (Hollstein 96-119). According to Dr. Jaap Bolten, despite the popularity of the Bloemaert/Bolswert prints, the current work is the only copy after the design of St. Jerome that has come to light thus far.
