Walkowitz (1878-1965) was born in Russia to Jewish parents and immigrated to the United States with his mother as a young child. He studied at the National Academy of Design, New York and the Académie Julian in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens. While studying in Paris he saw the seminal 1907 Paul Cézanne retrospective exhibit at the Salon d'Automne. The exhibition included compositions of Cézanne's now famous bathers, which remained an influence for Walkowitz throughout his career. He later became involved with Alfred Stieglitz's famed 291 Gallery, New York, which served as a hub of American modernism. His mature style, demonstrated in the current lot, was based on modern Europeanmovements, notably Fauvism, utilizing simplified forms and flat planes of bold colors.
