Ex-collection Zabriskie Gallery, New York.

Walkowitz (1878-1965) was born in Siberia to Jewish parents and immigrated to the United States with his mother as a young child. He studied at the National Academy of Design, New York. He later became involved with Alfred Stieglitz's famed 291 Gallery, which served as a hub of American modernism. His mature style, demonstrated in the current lot, was based on modern European movements, notably Fauvism, utilizing simplified forms and flat planes of bold color.
