ABRAHAM WALKOWITZ
Portrait of Chaim Gross.

Oil on canvas mounted on board, circa 1960. 510x405 mm; 20x16 1/4 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto.

Walkowitz (1878-1965) and Chaim Gross (1904-1991) both studied art at the Alliance Art School in New York City's Lower East Side. Part of the Educational Alliance, which was established in 1905 to serve as a settlement house for Eastern European Jewish immigrants in New York City, the school also trained the artists Ben Shahn, Leonard Baskin, Moses Soyer, Louise Nevelson, Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko. Gross, who later taught at the Alliance Art School, also worked for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930s, creating sculptures in wood, stone and bronze.
