ABRAM GAMES (1914-1996) SHELL OIL STAYS ON THE JOB. 1939.
291/2x441/4 inches.
Condition A. Matted and framed.
Games who was largely self taught, became successful very quickly after he opened his own studio working with major clients like Shell. During World War II he became the official War Poster Designer for Britain (designing over 100 for the war effort), and he continued to be prolific after the war ended, enjoying his position as the preeminent graphic designer in England. Here, to illustrate the slogan "Stays on the job" Games uses the same articulated mannequin that E. McKnight Kauffer had invented for Shell. The figure is gracefully riding a bucking bronco, staying on his mount the way Shell "stays on the job," with the added implication that Shell can "tame" the horsepower of any vehicle. Shell 85.
