Additional Details

First published in 1666, an account of experiments and discoveries made by the first scientific society, the Accademia del Cimento in Florence, which was active from 1657 to 1667. Its ten members included Vincenzo Viviani, Giovanni Borelli, Nicolaus Steno, and Francesco Redi. Among the subjects of their investigations were air pressure, the speed of sound, radiant heat, phosphorescence, the compressibility of water and its expansion on freezing, and the plane of oscillation of a pendulum.
