ADAMS, JOHN QUINCY. Lectures on Rhetoric and Oratory Delivered to the Classes of Senior and Junior Sophisters in Harvard University. 2 volumes. 8vo, original boards, moderate wear, front board coming loose; unopened, minor foxing; early owners' inscriptions. Cambridge, MA, 1810

Additional Details

Noteworthy for its interesting provenance. The title page inscription reads "Presented W. Smith Esq. by the author" (alas, not in Adams's hand). This was apparently a gift from the future president to his mother's cousin William Smith (1755-1816), Harvard Class of 1775. The fly leaves bear the name of Smith's daughter H. [Hannah Smith] Pickman (1794-1863), and the endpapers bear gift inscriptions dated 1863 from "Aunt Pickman" to William Vincent Smith (1840-1920).
