ADOLFO HOHENSTEIN (1854-1928) DOVER-OSTEND LINE. Circa 1900.
40x251/4 inches. J. L. Goffart, Brussels.
Condition B+: repaired tears and creases in margins and image; vertical folds.
Hohenstein spent his whole career with Ricordi the great Italian publishing company. He began working there in 1889 designing sheet music covers for operas. Shortly thereafter he became art director of the firm and began to design posters. He had a large influence on the young artists who joined the studio (such as Leopoldo Metlicovitz and Marcello Dudovitch) many of whom went on to great renown, and he himself came to be considered the father of Italian Posters. In many ways he applied to graphic art what the flamboyant Macchaioli school did to paintings. The few commissions Hohenstein received outside of Italy were for tourism. In addition to this poster, he also designed a remarkable series promoting travel to Monte Carlo. Here he creates an elaborate composition in pastel tones, with young ladies on the deck of a ship waving farewell. He has left just enough room on the right side of the image to show sailors and the sea itself. Gold 134.
