ADOLPH KARPELLUS (1869-1919) WIENER KLEIDERHAUS.
481/2x351/4 inches. Max Graf, Vienna.
Condition A-: discoloration in image; creases in margins. Japan.
Karpellus studied art in both Paris and Vienna, and is primarily known as a painter. However, his studies at Paris' Academie Julian introduced him to the world of French poster art. When he returned to Austria he was one of the first specialists in that field. In 1905 a show of his poster art was displayed at the Wiener Kunstlerhaus. Although he is primarily known for his World War I images, he was also heavily involved in commercial advertising. This image is of an affluent Viennese man trying on new clothes in a shop. He is dapper, poised and confident. As he is putting on his gloves he can't help but admire, and compare himself to, the classical portraits of ancient aristocrats that hang around him. The contemporary, flat-tone composition of the man helps him to stand out against the elegant, old-world background. Previously unreferenced.
