ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) ITALIA. 1936.
39 1/4x24 1/4 inches, 99 3/4x61 1/2 cm. Coen & Co., Milan.
Condition A-: minor creases and tape-repaired tears in margins, some affecting image; tape on verso. Paper.
One of two images Cassandre produced for the ENIT (Italian Railway) during a summer's stay in Italy with his assistant Raymond Savignac in 1935. Here, the focus is on art, history and religion. In a style far more suggestive and surrealistic than his Machine Age images of trains and ocean liners, Cassandre depicts the Madonna and Child and Roman ruins with faint mountains visible in the background. Mouron 61, Manifesta 1, Cassandre / Weill 172, MoMA 434.1976.
