ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) NORD MAGAZINE. 1927. Gouache on photo maquette.
9x6 3/4 inches.
Condition A-: unobtrusive stains and abrasions in image.
In 1927 Cassandre began working for the Chemins de fer du Nord, thanks to Maurice Moyrand, with whom he founded the Alliance Graphique. Moyrand was in charge of advertising for the railroad and worked out of the Danel printer in Lille. Not only did Cassandre design his famous series of posters (Etoile du Nord<>, Nord Express<>, etc), but he also redesigned the cover of the Railroad's magazine. The design, which was reused for every issue, features a compass needle, much like on the Etoile du Nord<> poster, but with a few added strokes of gouache to the photograph, which provide a sense of movement and vibration to the sober, modernistic design.
