ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968)

REGLISSE FLORENT. 1925.

59x39½ inches, 149¾x100¼ cm. Hachard & Cie., Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears at edges; creases and abrasions in margins and image; staining at edges; linenbacked, with non-archival paper on recto.

These mints were so well known to the French public that "it was therefore not a question of informing people of a special fact, a new argument, or an astonishing result. It was enough [for Cassandre] only to put before their eyes . . a familiar form whose very notoriety was its greatest strength" (Vendre, July 1926, p. 52). He does so in a vigorous, Cubist manner in which "all its linear elements are composed in such a way that their geometry attracts the eye" (ibid). He puts the product's name on a curve that echoes the contours of the container itself, and the color scheme, as with Cassandre's poster for Nouvelliste, is red, white and blue. Here, he actually signs his name in red, which is a unique case amongst his works.
