ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) UNIC. 1932.
62 3/4x46 1/2 inches, 159 1/2x118 cm. Alliance Graphique, Paris.
Condition B: restored losses, abrasions and overpainting in margins; repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image.
In the early 1930s, Cassandre designed a few posters in the "Neue Sachlichkeit," the New Realism style. Unlike the hyper-realism of the Swiss approach, Cassandre "augmented" reality to serve his artistic vision, as seen here, where one shoe is larger than the other and the socks are left unfinished. This poster shows that Cassandre is "also a magisterial designer with an airbrush. It is a sober, hyper realist object poster that is a model of classic design" (Cassandre / Weill p. 62). Mouron pl. 38, Cassandre / Suntory 26, Brown & Reinhold 38, Cassandre / Weill p. 63.
