ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) UNIC. 1934. Gouache and airbrush maquette.
50 1/2x38 inches, 128x96 1/2 cm.
Condition B+: minor staining, abrasions and discoloration in image; minor tears and losses at edges. Painted on paper and mounted to linen. Hand-signed.
In 1932, Cassandre designed a poster for Unic shoes. His realistic depiction of the footwear was in the manner of the Swiss Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). Two years later, he designed this one, which was never published. It is a work of exceptional artistry and craftsmanship, highlighting Cassandre's virtuoso ability to combine gouache and airbrush. It is the first maquette of such quality and importance to come to the market in many years. Last exhibited at the 1967 Cassandre retrospective at the Rijks Akademie in Amersterdam, it appears in photographs from the exhibition (see page 104, A.M. Cassandre en zijn Nederlandse opdrachtgevers), and has a customs stamp on the back. Mouron p 78.
