ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968)

VAN NELLE PAKJES KOFFIE. 1931.

46x62 inches, 116¾x157½ cm. Nijgh & Van Ditmar, Rotterdam.
Condition B+ / B: replaced losses with overpainting; repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Framed.

Thanks to a connection with the advertising agency Nijgh and van Ditmar, Cassandre did a lot of work for major Dutch clients, like Oranjeboom beer, Holland America Line, De Vries Robbe, Philips and Van Nelle, an important coffee dealer. This is his most progressively modernist poster and also the purest and most minimal image he ever designed, with a simple, geometric outline of box and a similarly simple coffee bean. Cassandre augments the pure design by using sharp colors, an airbrushed background that seems to vibrate and exceptional typography.
