ADOLPHE WILLETTE JOURNEE DE L'HERAULT. 1916.
43x311/4 inches. Devambez, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears and discoloration in margins and text at bottom; vertical and horizontal folds; trimmed at top margin.
For this one day, fund-raising celebration in the south of France to raise money for the district's war fund, Willette has created a cartoon sure to appeal to vintners in this prominent wine region. A large, drunk German soldier is staggering through a French vineyard, trampling grapes and animals as he goes. Bachus, atop a vat of wine, is trying to fend him off, above the caption "Bachus, will you save us from phylloxera!" Phylloxera was a disease that attacked the roots of vines, destroying much of France's vineyards in the late 19th century. The comparison of Germans to this deadly disease which was so disastrous to the French economy and morale is exceptional.
