Lubbers (1892-1954) was born in The Netherlands and initially studied mechanical engineering before turning to the fine arts in the mid-1910s. He met the artist Leo Gestel in Amsterdam and that eventually led him to New York in the early 1920s, where he lived for the next several years, producing paintings, drawings and lithographs, and survived on a myriad of odd jobs such as a mechanic, a herring peddler and a cabaret singer in Hoboken, New Jersey. He died in New York unexpectedly of a brain hemorrhage during one of his frequent stays in the city throughout his career.
