ADRIEN BARRÈRE (1877-1931) GALIPAUX.
31 3/4x23 3/4 inches. Wall & Cie., Paris.
Condition A-: time-staining in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds.
Galipaux (1860-1931) was a comic actor who became one of the stars of the French theatre. A tireless performer, he was famous for his monologues and appeared in all of the best Parisian venues. As early as 1898 he even started acting in movies, and continued to be active as an actor and a writer even after the First World War. His performance was so remarkable that the French word "galipette" (somersault), was coined in his name. This poster is one in a series that the great impresario, Charles Baret, commissioned Barrere to design. Baret had so many performers in his stable, and Barrere was such a great caricaturist, that it was an obvious match of talents. Galipaux's fame was great enough to warrant caricatures by both Leonetto Cappiello and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec as well.
