ADRIEN BARRÈRE (1877-1931) LE SECRET DE POLICHINELLE. Circa 1905.
54 1/2x39 1/4 inches. Wall & Cie., Paris.
Condition B+: restored losses, repaired tears and time-staining along vertical and horizontal folds.
In addittion to his work for Charles Baret, Barrere also accepted other theatrical commissions. Here, for Felix Huguenet, he devises a small graphic pun based on the ambiguous title of a comedy. "Le Secret de Polichinelle" can be interpreted as "an open secret" or as "the puppet's secret." Barrere illustrated a combination of the two, showing a small puppet whispering his secret into the ear of a respectable member of the bourgeoisie.
