ADRIEN BARRÈRE (1877-1931) MAYOL.
31 3/4x23 3/4 inches. Wall & Cie., Paris.
Condition A-: time-staining in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds.
Felix Mayol, who wrote over 500 songs, was the biggest star of the French café-concert world during the twenty-five years leading up to the First World War. In spite of, or perhaps on account of, his declared homosexuality, he was particularly adored by his female fans. With his emblematic lily and tuft of hair, his image was a caricaturist's dream. Barrere designed several posters for Mayol, including a variation of this image, with a green background. Charles Baret, the great impresario, was able to arrange engagements for Mayol all over Europe and as far afield as the Middle East. This is another stock poster that Baret had produced by his favorite caricaturist. Café-Concert 252.
