Aert de Gelder was one of Rembrandt's (1606-1669) last pupils while in Amsterdam, working in his studio from 1661 to 1663. He is considered among the most talented of Rembrandt's students and one of his most devoted followers, a significant Dutch artist who worked in the tradition of Rembrandt's late style well into the 18th century.
