AGOSTINO AGLIO
(Cremona 1777-1857 London)
View of Meissen from the Elbe River * View of Heidelberg Castle.

Two pen and black ink and brown wash and black chalk drawings on cream wove paper. Both approximately 215x310 mm; 8 1/2x12 1/4 inches. Both signed and extensively titled in ink, lower recto.

Provenance: Both private collection, New Jersey.

Aglio trained in his native Cremona and settled in England by 1803. Before his arrival in England, he had travelled through Greece and Egypt with the English architect and archaeologist William Wilkins, R.A. (1778-1839), which doubtlessly influenced his relocation to London. He worked as a scene painter at the Haymarket theater, London, and as a fresco painter for country houses. He began working in lithography starting in 1809 and through the printmaking medium widely distributed his detailed and harmonious landscape views.
