According to Bohlin, this print was so popular and renowned in its day that Tintoretto (1518-1594), after whose painting in the Scuola di San Rocco, Venice, Carracci based his engraving, thought it rivaled the painting. According to Boschini, Daniel Nis took the plates to Flanders to have them gilt to prevent further deterioration from printing.
