AL HIRSCHFELD.
"A True Map of Ye Summer Theatres Situate 45 Minutes and More from Ye Olde Broadwaye." Illustration published in The New York Times, June 9, 1935. Pen and ink with correction fluid on board. 530x629 mm; 20 3/4x24 3/4 inches (board). Humorously signed "Cartography by Hirschfeld" below title, lower right. Quite fragile, with chipping along bottom margin.

Summer theaters were as prolific as resorts along the eastern seaboard in the 1930s and their seasons were heralded by Hirschfeld's drawings in the New York and New England newspapers. This humorous cartographic depiction of "The Straw Hat Trail," as it was known, accurately captures the spirit of the illustrated maps made famous by his friend and mentor, John Held, Jr., It is the first of twenty such annual summer theater drawings that he created for the drama pages of The New York Times and the Herald Tribune.
