Chicago native Al Tyler received a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1956 and did graduate studies in fresco and mural painting at La Escuela Nacional de Artes Plasticas in Mexico City. Tyler was a staff artist in the Planning Department for the City of Evanston, IL for 34 years and served as an adviser for many art-related projects throughout Chicago. His artwork was inspired by the architecturural landscape of the urban city.

His works are in the collections of the Dusable Museum of African American History, Chicago, the Johnson Publishing Company, Chicago, the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and DC General Hospital, Washington, DC.
