ALAN ALDRIDGE (1938-2017)

Chelsea Girls.
Offset lithograph poster. 762x502 mm, 30x19¾ inches. 1971. Faintly signed and inscribed by the artist in pen. Motif Editions, Shenval Press, Harlow. 1970.

Aldridge, an illustrator and graphic designer, rose to prominence as the art director at Penguin books. He became best known for his illustrations for albums by such bands as The Who and The Beatles for whom he also did design work on books and articles. Here, he uses a photograph of Claire Shenstone as the basis for his macabre and erotic, advent calendar-style design, suggestive of all the different activities going on at the hotel. For the second British release of Andy Warhol's 1966 film. Warhol himself was pleased enough with the design to comment that he "wished the movie was as good as the poster."
