ALBERT GUILLAUME (1873-1942) ARMOUR & CO. / EXTRAIT DE VIANDE. 1891.
52x393/4 inches. Camis, Paris.
Condition B+: vertical and horizontal folds; minor tears and staining in margins.
Guillaume was a prolific illustrator who did work for magazines, books and almanacs. He was also a painter and a poster designer. Working for the big Parisian printer Camis, he did a lot of advertising for music hall stars (Yvette Guilbert, Louis Bannisson and Gigolette, to name a few) but also did plenty of commercial advertising, using various characters like dandies, officers and even caricaturing celebrities of the time. To promote this meat extract bullion, from the Chicago meat yards (that were mythical in Europe) Guillaume uses a bold, powerful drawing of a weight-lifter (a very popular act in these days in Parisian circuses) drinking a cup of the product. The poster exists in various formats and versions proving that it was a successful and popular ad. Weill p. 47 no. 69, Maitres pl. 163.
