Guillaume was a prolific illustrator who began his career working as a caricaturist for many magazines and soon became a poster designer. He transferred his humorist realism to the larger format of posters, using a gallery of characters (bourgeoisie, officers, aristocrats, servants and even caricaturing celebrities of the time) to advertise drinks and groceries. Here, to promote a brand of bicycle, he has forgone his comic style in favor of a more straightforward depiction. He illustrates French President Marie François Sadi Carnot (he was elected in 1887 and was assassinated in 1894) awarding a golden wreath to the victor in a bicycle race. Rare. Reims 710.
