The French Line launched the Rochambeau in 1911 to sail the route from Le Havre to New York until the First World War. When the war broke out, the ship was chartered by the American Ambassador to France to help repatriate American citizens living in Europe. The Chicago and Niagara were two other ships in the French line fleet that serviced New York from Le Havre. Sebille was an accomplished maritime artist who created many posters for the French Line. His signature on his works is invariably followed by an anchor, emphasizing his connection to the sea. This poster is especially noticeable for its beautiful oceanic-themed decorative border.
