ALBRECHT DÜRER
The Life of the Virgin.
Set of 19 (of 20) woodcuts, 1502-10. Each approximately 295x215 mm; 11 5/8x8 1/2 inches, small to thread margins. Eight ex-collection Carl Hartmann, with inscription in ink, versos (not in Lugt). Most with a small city gate or shield with a diagonal band watermark (Meder 270 and 246, which he dates from 1550 to 1600). Each after the 1511 Latin text edition; lacks the title page. Generally good, strong impressions.
According to Meder, sets of the Life of the Virgin issued after the 1511 Latin text edition vary in the quality of impressions and, like the current set, almost all lack the original woodcut title page. Bartsch 76-95; Meder 188-207.
