Saint Sebald, the patron saint of Nuremberg, is depicted here holding a model of the church of St. Sebald, which was near where Dürer lived and worked for most of his life. Dürer (1471-1528) was baptized and married in the church and most of his family is interred there. Matthias Mende has firmly attributed this work to Dürer himself, previously it was considered the work of his assistant, Hans Springinklee (1495-1540).
