ALBRECHT DÜRER
The Large Column (Satyr).

Woodcut on thin cream laid paper, 1517. 405x265 mm; 16x10 1/2 inches. A good, evenly-printed Meder 4.2 impression (which he dates from around 1590-1600). Shield watermark. The top portion of the column only, with the satyr as the capital. A very good, dark and evenly-printed impression of this extremely scarce print.

Designed for Emperor Maximilian I, this woodcut "column" would have been used for temporary decoration. An example with hand coloring is in Nuremberg. According to Meder, who attributes the woodcut to Dürer and his school, scarce in any issue--whether all 4 sheets or single sheets.

We have not found another impression at auction in the past 20 years. Bartsch 129; Meder p. 257.
