ALBRECHT DÜRER
The Virgin and Child Crowned by One Angel.

Engraving, 1520. 139x99 mm; 5 1/2x3 3/4 inches. A superb, dark, richly-inked Meder II a impression, with the short scratch from the angel's left palm into the nimbus, with very strong contrasts and every detail distinct, with no sign of wear, consistent with the earliest impressions of this subject. Small jug watermark (Meder 158, which he dates to circa 1525). With thread margins or trimmed on the plate mark.

Provenance: Alexander Danz (?) or unidentified collector, according to Lugt, Leipzig (Lugt 103, verso); unidentified collection, initials A.D. ink stamp (Lugt 99; Lugt notes that this collector's ink stamp is frequently found on engravings by Dürer and Hans Sebald Beham); Robert Scholtz, Budapest (Lugt 2241, verso).

Bartsch 37; Meder 41.
