ALBRECHT DÜRER
Ulrich Varnbüler.

Woodcut, 1522. 426x325 mm; 16 3/4x12 7/8 inches. A very good Meder 2 impression. Single-headed eagle watermark (similar to Meder 234, which he dates to circa 1590). Trimmed on the black border line, with the border line showing on all 4 sides.

Extremely scarce in this relatively early issue. Meder lists a third state (of 3) printed as a chiaroscuro (or color) woodcut after 1620. We have found only impressions of the chiaroscuro woodcut portrait at auction and have not located another impression of the woodcut portrait in either the first or second state at auction in the past 20 years. Bartsch 155; Meder 256.
