ALBRECHT DÜRER (after)
The Great Triumphal Wagon.

Engraving on 3 joined sheets, circa 1600. 1010x202 mm; 39 3/4x8 inches, overall (largest dimensions). A very good impression of this scarce engraving, with strong contrasts.

Based on a larger woodcut (on 8 joined sheets of paper) that Dürer had planned beginning in the early 1510s in celebration of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519). Work on the monumental woodcut was not started until around 1519 and only completed in 1522, after the emperor's death. As in Dürer's woodcut, in this engraving Maximilian I is seated on the wagon, surrounf by personifications of Victory, Truth, Clemency and Security. cf. Bartsch 139; Meder 252.
