ALBRECHT DÜRER
Saint Sebald in a Niche.

Woodcut, 1518. 298x210 mm; 11 3/4x8 1/4 inches, wide margins. A very good Schoch, Mende, Scherbaum I b-c impression. Nuremberg coat-of-arms watermark (Meder 209).

Provenance: Abraham G. Gerson, Vienna (Lugt 1156a, verso).

Saint Sebald, the patron saint of Nuremberg, is depicted here holding a model of the church of St. Sebald, which was near where Dürer lived and worked for most of his life. Dürer (1471-1528) was baptized and married in the church and most of his family is interred there. Matthias Mende has firmly attributed this work to Dürer himself, previously it was considered the work of his assistant, Hans Springinklee (1495-1540).

Schoch, Mende, Scherbaum 251.
