ALBRECHT DÜRER
The Siege of a Fortress.

Woodcut on 2 joined sheets, 1527. 225x725 mm; 9x28 1/2 inches (overall). A very good, well-inked and dark Meder a-b impression of this extremely scarce woodcut, with strong contrasts. With thread margins or trimmed on the border line, with the border line preserved all around.

We have found only 6 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years.

According to Bartrum, "This woodcut was executed in connection with Dürer's treatise on fortification, Etliche underricht zu befestigung der Stett Schlosz und flecken, which was published in Nuremberg in 1527, the year before the artist's death . . . This woodcut was not published in the main edition of the book but has been found inserted in the back of a small number of trial copies, usually near the list of errata not present in the main corrected edition," (Bartrum, Albrecht Dürer and his Legacy, London, 2002, p. 221). Bartsch 137; Meder 271.
