POSSIBLY THE FIRST AA PUBLICATION AFTER THE 1939 "BIG BOOK" ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS. Pamphlet titled "A.A." 33 pages. 8vo, original printed wrappers; minor wear. New York: Alcoholic Foundation, P.O. Box 658, June 1940

Additional Details

This pamphlet consists of a short introduction, six articles reprinted from the Houston Press, the Twelve Steps, and an article by physician W.D. Silkworth. Some sources credit early Houston AA member Larry Jewell as the author of the newspaper articles. The introduction boasts: "Rapidly growing, now numbering about five hundred, our Fellowship is spreading throughout the country." Membership is now estimated at nearly two million.
Another claimant for the title of first AA pamphlet is 'Mr. X and Alcoholics Anonymous,' a sermon delivered in Cleveland on 26 November 1939 and supposed to be printed locally as a pamphlet soon after. No copy of this early printing has been traced, and its exact date of publication is unknown. In any event, the present pamphlet is certainly the first issued by the Alcoholic Foundation after the "Big Book."
