ALEX DA CORTE (1980- )

Untitled (10-31-06).
Archival pigment print. 508x508 mm; 20x20 inches. Edition of 50. Signed and numbered on certificate of authenticity. 2013.

Alex Da Corte's series of date paintings are made with objects collected on the same day of its namesake - in this case, Halloween 2006. A raw egg, a straw, and a dollar bill are staged into a graphic composition that resonates with the kitschy holiday in unexpected ways.

Da Corte is a conceptual artist whose work explores the nuances of contemporary experience by layering inspirations from varied sources, drawing equally from popular culture and art history. Recent exhibitions include "Mr. Remember" at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark (2022–23) and the video survey Fresh Hell at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan (2023); the Whitney Biennial Quiet as It's Kept (2022); the Roof Garden Commission for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2021); the Biennale di Venezia "May You Live in Interesting Times," Venice (2019).

Da Corte was the 2023 Philip Guston Rome Prize Fellow at the American Academy in Rome. In 2026, with the Whitney Museum's Meg Onli and Scott Rothkopf, Da Corte will co-curate the first Roy Lichtenstein retrospective in New York in more than 30 years.
