ALEX KATZ
Hiroshi (Cartoon).

Charcoal and ochre chalk on brown wove paper, 1979. 1220x870 mm; 48x34 1/4 inches. Signed, dated and dedicated in pencil, lower right recto.

Acquired directly from the artist; private collection.

This drawing, a portrait of Katz's printmaker Hiroshi Kawanishi, was likely a cartoon for a painting of the same year (location unknown). The sheet has the original pinned wheel holes which Katz would run over with ochre chalk to transfer the image to canvas. A 1981 painting in the collection of the Tate, London, Hiroshi and Marcia (T03805), depicts the same subject.
