ALEXANDER ALEXEIEFF (1901-1982) THE NIGHT SCOTSMAN. 1932.
40x50 inches. Waterlow & Sons., London.
Condition A-: creases and discoloration in margins; unobtrusive vertical folds. Paper.
Born in Russia Alexeieff emigrated to Paris after the revolution and, like Alexey Brodovitch, became involved in stage design thanks to the omni-present Ballets Russes<>. He then worked in advertising, as a painter and as an illustrator for luxury books. In fact, he is most remembered for his animated cartoons, using a method he invented with his wife, like A Night on Bald Mountain<> or the Sleeping Beauty<> which he created for Nicolas, the wine merchant. Alexeieff did two posters for the LNER which were like no other train advertisement before in that they created the strange universe of a surrealist dream; Dine on the LNER<>, 1928, an esoteric evocation of a dining table on rails, and this one from 1932. For this night train to Scotland he portrays a flying engine under a full moon, reflected in a lake. All the mystery of the night, the moors, the wild landscape and fairy tales are shown in this image, treated in light tones, which evokes the coloring in his animated films. This poster is as important and remarkable as it is rare.
