ALEXANDER CALDER
The Big I.

Etching on cream wove paper, 1944. 175x225 mm; 7x8 7/8 inches, full margins. Signed, titled and numbered 9/30 in pencil, lower margin. Printed at Atelier 17, New York. Published by Wittenburn & Co., New York. A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce, early etching.

This is among Calder's earliest etchings, which he made at the New York location of Stanley W. Hayter's Atelier 17 (based in Paris, Hayter had moved the studio to New York on account of World War II, 1940-50).

We have found only 4 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years and have located 3 impressions in American public collection: The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.; and the Whitney Museum of America Art, New York.
