The Department of Mathematics at Johns Hopkins University was founded in 1876. Eight years later, Newcomb was appointed professor of mathematics and astronomy there, a position he held until 1893. While at Johns Hopkins, Newcomb edited the American Journal of Mathematics 1885-1900, and co-founded the American Astronomical Society in 1899.
