Additional Details

Alexander John Drysdale was born in Marietta, Georgia, but his childhood was spent moving through the Southern United States with his family, led by his father, an iterant Episcopal priest. They eventually settled in New Orleans in 1883, and Drysdale took art instruction from Ida C. Haskell and later attended the Sothern Art Union. Drysdale had success with showing his artwork in local exhibitions in New Orleans and in 1901 decided to try to establish himself in New York and attend classes at the Art Students League. He returned to New Orleans in 1903, heavily influenced by the artwork he saw in New York, especially the impressionistic works of William Merritt Chase. He spent the rest of his career in New Orleans and proved to be a very successful and prolific artist known for his local landscapes. These landscapes, like the present painting, were painted with Drysdale's signature technique of thinning his oils with kerosene and applying the medium as one would a wash.
